PORNO BPM PARTY

Phil Banks is a rare breed of DJ that’s believes there are only two types of music ‘good & bad’, this open – minded approach to buying & playing music allows him to keep the clubber at the forefront of his mind without compromising the quality of records in his box, never relying on quick fix commercial music, allowing him to drop those killer but not obvious tracks that keep the dance-floor interested, the sort of tune selection that can create a memorable night.

If Phil’s not behind a set of decks you will find him searching through crates of second hand vinyl hunting for undiscovered or long lost gems, searching the net for the latest tunes or hooking up with like-mined DJ’s & Producers, continually trying to get his hands on as much good music as possible!

This is evident in his sound & style, a sound that maybe based around relentless house grooves but expect electronic disco dubs, acid house, electro, experimental funk & Balearic type tracks to feature effortlessly. Simply summed up ‘forward thinking dance-music fuelled by an acid house soul, looking to the past as well as the future’, you will always find an element of history in one of Phil’s sets.

A strong believer in natural progression Phil’s patience & intuition continue to be a major factor in his ability to create new openings, allowing him to take advantage of any opportunities that come his way.
Past projects have also proved to be an invaluable source from which he has learnt to focus on future aims & goals. Never one to be beaten he will always look forward, using a combination of genuine enthusiasm & a realistic ‘cards on the table’ approach to life as a tool to keep himself & the people he’s working close to motivated in the somewhat unpredictable world of the music industry.

Ever since Phil started collecting vinyl way back in 1985 & becoming a regular clubber at the beginning of the 90’s his music taste has always been discerning, this has been reflected in his earliest parties such as Population, which was responsible for kick starting the pre-club bar scene in his home town of Plymouth, SW England.

Since then Phil has played many parties, club-nights, festivals, live art performances & radio shows, alongside an impressive list of the UK’s finest DJ’s!

As well as many UK gigs he has also held down various residencies & had many guest spots around Dublin over the past 6 years, including: Mono (home to BuggedOut! & Cream), Switch (one of Dublin’s finest Sunday night basement riots!), VIP room at the Witness Festival (headlined by Prodigy, Groove Armada, Lemon Jelly), guest spots on Ireland’s biggest radio station 2FM…

Phil’s most recent party Deadfly (which has just finished to make way for a new project) ran for 5 years & was responsible for bringing the UK’s finest DJ’s to his home town, putting it firmly on the discerning clubbers map.

As well as its monthly knees-up Deadfly also put on various boat parties & hosted many arenas at local festivals, regularly featuring in DJ Mags top 5 nights in the South West, guests include:
Soul Mekanik (Kelvin Andrews), James Holroyd (Backtobasics resident & Chemical Brothers Tour DJ), Sancho Panza (Nottinghill Carnival, Radio 1 Stage at Glasonbury), Rob Bright (BuggedOut! resident), Unabombers (Electric Chair), Jon Marsh (Beloved), Miles Hollway (Robodisco), Stuart Patterson (Faith), Bill Brewster (Lowlife), Stereo MC’s (DJ set), Jon Kahuna (FC Kahuna), Mudd (Rong Records), Greg Wilson (UK electro pioneer), Phil Mison (Reverso 68, Cafe Del Mar), Justin Harris (Music For Freaks), Balearic Mike (Aficionado)…the list goes on.

Phil also recently co-promoted & held residency at Chameleon with deep house producer Ben Wijay (Paper, DIY Discs), Chameleon was voted by Mixmag as the best small club-night in the South West 2004. Chameleon is on hold whilst Ben travels the world DJ’ing but there is a one-off party planned sometime towards the end of August.

Phil is currently holding down a new monthly residency at Fully Furnished (Dublin), his new project www.musicismypoison.com has various one-off events (including a boat party) in place for his home town of Plymouth over the next few months, there are future guest spots at London based ‘Silver Bobs Disco Meltdown’ which is hosted & promoted by Mudd from San Francisco’s Rong Records & Steve Kotey’s Bear Entertainment, plus collaborations with Exeter’s ever popular Earwax crew, to top things off he has his sights firmly set on Bangkok for the end of 2005…watch this space!
